Quick Facts
Centipede Grass
- The natural color is a yellowish green. An established Centipede Lawn only requires a complete fertilizer application (i.e.: 16-4-8) twice a year.
- An insecticide should be applied as a preventative during the growing season for mole crickets and grubs.
- Centipede responds well to frequent watering depending on soil type; as long as the turf is not standing in water, water as much as you desire.
St. Augustine Grass
- Contrary to popular belief, although St. Augustine is shade tolerant, it will not grow in a fully shaded area. It requires at least 3 to 4 hours per day to maintain a lush appearance.
- Always apply a fungicide as a preventative during the growing season (May through October) to prevent disease.
- Always water St. Augustine in the morning, not the evening, as to allow the moisture to evaporate and therefore prevent disease.
Zoysia
- Zoysia has shade tolerance and is traffic resistant. It has a dark green color and can be fertilized 3 to 4 times during the growing season (May through September) with a complete fertilizer (ie:16-4-8)
- Also apply an insecticide during the growing season to prevent insect infestation(be wary of armyworms and sod webworms during the months of August and September).
- Zoysia is a drought tolerant turf, but also does well with proper irrigation.
Bermuda (Celebration and Tifton 419)
- Tifton 419 requires full sun exposure.
- Celebration Bermuda will grow in partial shade although it requires 5 to 6 hours of full sun a day.
- Both varieties can be aggressively fertilized with a high nitrogen fertilizer during the growing season.
- Apply insecticide as a preventative, especially during the months of August and September to prevent Sod Webworm and Armyworm infestation.
Fescue
- Fescue is a cool season grass that will not grow in a hot climate but is adaptable to the upstate area of South Carolina and all of North Carolina
- Fescue should be mowed at heights of 2 to 3 inches for optimum growth.
- Apply a fungicide as necessary during the warmer months to prevent fungus.
